Virtual assistant jobs commonly require an experience in social media optimization and social media marketing. For newbies, they’d be overwhelmed with the somewhat profound words, although mostly all of them have Facebook and Twitter experiences, or browsed through videos on YouTube plenty of times. But without a background on how these sites are used in business and marketing, wannabe virtual assistants would jump far from an opportunity requiring SMO or SMM.
Truth is: both social media optimization and marketing can be easily learned. To have a better grasp of these two, let me explain.
Social media optimization or SMO is a simple series of tasks for a website to make it visitor-friendly. That’s why virtual assistants come very handy with this strategy. SMO simply means gearing up the website to make it accessible for the social media by having quick tools. For example, site visitors wish to bookmark the website’s page and not use the browser feature. Or like most of us do, we want to express we “Like” the post but not necessarily comment. With an online bookmarking button and that “Like” button available on a website, things are made simpler and very possible. Particularly for online bookmarking, backlinks are generated with just the simple social media button. As for the big number of “Likes”, well, who doesn’t get attracted to big numbers?
A great way (although tedious for some) to have their websites optimized would be having a blog in there. The unique, fresh and entertaining information in blogs drive readers to have it bookmarked and shared with just one click. Blogging has become very important for most online businesses because it boosts rankings, especially if its content is well-written. Most marketing efforts of websites rely largely on well written blogs.
Another great way to optimize a website with social media would be having subscription options, most popular of which is the RSS. The orange-y RSS feeds are meant to keep site visitors updated with the website’s latest products, services and whathaveyous.
As for social media marketing or SMM, here’s what it is and how it works. SMM is closely related to SMO and relies largely on it because of the earned online exposure that SMO has already brought in. But social media marketing is more in-depth as it needs to rake more traffic and generate more leads or pre-qualified leads. The marketing efforts must then be focused on which social media avenues they must pursue, and the management of all these online resources to promote their website, product or services.
Businesses have to study their target audience, the most feasible social media to engage in and the produce the most attractive and creative promotional efforts in each social media. The most favorite social media sites would be Twitter, Facebook and Digg. Coming close are Reddit and LinkedIn. Personally, these social network sites are great help in telling the world about my latest post. Even my latest mood! For now, I cannot say much for StumbleUpon as I don’t have an account there just yet. StumbleUpon. As for those with powerful videos, they’d be doubling their time with marketing videos for YouTube.
Now, what does a virtual assistant do for the SMO and SMM efforts of their employers?
For social media optimization, VAs are usually required to directly put social media features in the website or its content. That means you have to be familiar with configuring HTML, codes and scripts. You’ll be likely asked to upload sharing buttons, RSS feeds, feedback and polling features and a host of others. Your employer would want to see these on their website to engage visitors, and at the same time to efficiently promote it.
Another most likely task for VAs would be active participation on discussion boards and posting of updates on Twitter and Facebook. Sounds like these would be the easiest kind of VA work, huh? It’s a good start. You might have to learn photo and video sharing as well as most SMO tasks would require it, along with social bookmarking.
But if you’re confident about writing or want to learn the ropes, then you could also do blogging as well. Again, blogs are one of the most effective SMO strategies so push yourself to learn how to. Some employers deliberately post on jobsites that they require a good writer. But actually, they want someone to do the SMO, particularly blogging.
Bear in mind that as virtual assistants, you’d have to be at pace with the demands of your employer who desires wider marketing scope, massive links, quality content and website accessibility to the visitors. Get ready and equip yourself with what you must learn to be good at SMO, and be a quality virtual assistant!
With social media marketing, your focus must shift a notch or two. Tasks may be similar to SMO, or you could actually be assigned both. But as SMM is about increasing a website’s rankings in search engines, a change of gears is imperative. You need to know about branding, make SEO-quality content or writing, and have really persuasive ideas to increase traffic to your employer’s website. After all, ranking on top of Google, a 70% increase of site visitors and more leaders besides, is what your boss wants! Doing excellently at SMM would earn you a trusting and happy boss. And who knows, maybe an increase in pay and perks?

Me and the Oh!SomeAngels would be delighted to hear from you. Right, Angels… Uh, Angels? Oh. OK. Sorry about that. They have 3 SMO/SMM projects under way. So they don’t have much time to chat. But I do. I really do.
